Editions At Play is an initiative from Visual Editions and Google’s Creative Lab. They make and champion books that are powered by the magic of the internet. They believe that physical books have qualities that don’t always transfer well to digital. Their books show that digital books have narrative qualities that don’t always transfer to print. Editions At Play is a space for books that cannot be printed.

The objective of the brief was to select a chapter from a banned book of any kind and visually interpret it as a digitally dynamic book. It was expected from us to choose a chapter from the book that resonated with us, and that we found insightful.

Futhermore, we had to keep in mind why the book was banned in the first place and how people reacted towards it when it was first published, and why it was cencored. The book I chose to interpret vissually was Friedrich Nietzche

Beyond Good and Evil. My reson for choosing this book was that Nietzche accuses past pholosophers of lacking critical sence and blindly accepting dogmatic premises in their consideration of mortality.Specially, he accuses them of founding grand metaphysical systems upon the faith that the good man is the opposite of the evil man, rather than just a diffrent expression of the same basic impulses that find more direct expression in the evil man.

Becuase the work consists of 296 numbered sections and an “epod” (or “after-song”) entitled “From High Mountians”. I desided to make use of 7 sections that really appealed to me. With my design I took in to consideration how we currently interact and how we tell stories and engage with content on the web.

After reading the book, it became quickly evident that some of the content still has an underlining relevance in today’s society. I decided to do most of my typographic design in a deconstructive style. Making it almost hard to read forcing the reader to pay attention, but in the same scenes making it unleadable. I reused typographic elements to create patterns that overlaid onto the original text.

With each new section, I choose a sentence within the text to make chapter headings for each section. Furthermore, I included small giff’s into some of the designs to keep the readers interest. The big interactive element that I have included into the website is that the reader can click on elements on a page that directs them to an Easter egg video that has relevance to the page that they were viewing.

People that are interested in design and typography, also people that are looking for an alternative way of reading books. UX and UI professionals, typographers, typophiles, literary audiences or discerning members of the public.
